V magazine has an editorial and an interview with Ashley Graham. Photographer Steven Klein at the Standard for their January Issue, Ashley Graham, an outspoken body activist talks to friend Chelsea Handler about the silly and the serious: combating labels, the key to being a role model, and their shared fondness of “boobies.”

Role model
A role model with no clothes on… mmm… That’s something I don’t get lately, being a body activist doesn’t mean you always have to be naked. Or I am I a bit prude? I am also a body activist, a size hero, a feminist, but I keep my clothes on… haha
But keeping this sex bom curvy model, this stigma is what people already are having about big, plus size, curvy women. You can be a sexy power woman, without being a ‘porn star’. We already have achieved the level, inbetweenie models are confident and sexy…That’s my opinion. Stop saying curvy is sexy… all women are sexy when they feel good and are confident!

Drop the plus!
And Ashley is a fighter to stop using the word ‘plus size’. Which I support absolutely. Stop calling women plus, when they are the average size. But why always this stereotype of curvy, inbetweenie models in this kind of editorials?

Role
The pictures are amazing, it looks like she’s an escort lady, that’s the story: men are dressed and the girls are in lingerie. Why always this ‘role’? I must be a grumpy old woman when it becomes to body activity, body confidence. Confidence and being sexy is not showing your naked body all the time, it’s being strong and confident being you, being yourself.
Of course, Ashley is a model and here she portrayed as a escort. She must play this role as a model. But she could have said to V magazine: let’s change the roles. ‘Let me be the confident business woman and the men will be my sex toys’. A curvy business woman! Wow wow! Next time, Ashley!

Ashley, I love you anyway… because you are an example for many girls and women out there! You go!

What is it like now that all of these women are looking to you as a role model? And how does it feel when people ask you what it’s like to be a plus-size model, on a scale of 1-10?
“It’s an 11. I can’t stand that question anymore. I mean, I’ve been doing this now for 17 years and I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve spoken up about the label ‘plus-size’. I don’t think women should be labeled at all. I think that it’s completely divisive. But, for whatever reason, I am the one that has been given the opportunity to be on so many covers and to have a voice. I don’t take that lightly and I think that being the voice and face for so many women that haven’t been represented— in fashion, or film, or TV—is encouraging, it’s amazing. Some days I forget that and then someone comes to me crying and says, “Because of you, I wore shorts today,” or I’ll get an email that says, “I had sex with my husband with the lights on.” At those moments, I’m like, Wow, you are changing people’s lives, and you’re doing it by just being yourself.”
